ANTOINE GUILLAUME DE LA FONTAINE
Name Antoine Guillaume de la Fontaine. Nicknames 'Toine, Fontaine. PB Penn Badgley. Age Seventeen. Sex Male. Birthday April 11. Grade 12. Magic Category Mental - Psychometry. Location Avignon, France.
- THE MODEST INTELLECTUAL | Since Antoine has been at the Institute, people generally know him as a genius, and there's no way for them to deny it. For some reason, he seems to be the kid who always gets a hundred percent on every single test and the one who's constantly praised by his teachers for having such innovative insights. Antoine is, in a few words, a very hard worker. He's very academic and has an acute eye for detail. In spite of his high level of intelligence and the general perception of French people, Antoine does not at all think he's better than anyone. In fact, he makes every effort possible to come off as a polite gentleman. He always opens the door for people and allows them to go first. In classroom debates, he listens attentively to other people's ideas and praises them for all that they're worth. He also spends a lot of his time tutoring other students, but he's never strict or demeaning when he does it. All he really wants to do is help people. Even when the teacher hands him back a paper with a bright, shining red A, he will continually claim that it wasn't one of his better papers and even make an effort to change the subject so he can talk about how much your writing has improved.
- THE TACIT HEART | Outside of the academic realm, people rarely see or hear much from Antoine. He mostly keeps to himself and tries not to get in other people's way. It's actually quite interesting because his demeanor completely changes when people try to have a conversation with him about something that's not related to school. In general social situations, Antoine is actually very uncomfortable and, not surprisingly, does have a tendency to stutter or mumble a little bit. It would be safe to say that he is extremely socially awkward, but that doesn't cause him to abandon his kindhearted nature. He's generally very shy, but when he hears people start to put themselves down, he doesn't hesitate to spring out of his shell to tell them that they're wrong. And, well, let's just be honest: hugging is Antoine's secret pleasure. If he could, he would hug everybody all the time, but he doesn't want to draw all that attention to himself because that would be scary! For him, it's easy when people look at him while he's, for example, talking about a couple of lines in a Shakespeare play. It's an entirely different thing, one that is much more uncomfortable and harder to deal with, when people look at him or stare at him outside of that context. He fears people's gaze, and academics is really the only thing that gives him the confidence to face that fear. Sugar is not a main part of his diet, so it would be best if you don't give him any; give him one can of Coke, and he will be bouncing-off-the-freaking-walls excited. This, of course, is not a side that many people see, and a lot of them would probably be frightened if they did see it.
- THE MOTHER HEN | Living with his single father and two sisters has certainly taught Antoine what it's like to be "motherly"; in other words, very few people get to see his nurturing side. His good heart only touches slightly on this part of him, but it is far more complicated and deserves explanation of its own. When people look at Antoine, they see a big, burly man -- not somebody who's used to wiping kids' drippy noses or making dinner. This is not, of course, to say that Antoine is effeminate; rather, he has spent a lot of his youth taking care of his family in his mother's absence and has done his best to provide something like a mother for his two baby sisters. Those two girls mean more to him than anything in the entire world -- anything. And he would do absolutely anything for them. The reason one might call him a mother hen is because of his constantly worrisome nature wherever his sisters are concerned. When they're apart, Antoine is always wondering whether or not they're safe. And when they're together, he keeps them surprisingly close to his body, in a very affectionate kind of way; he almost always has his arm around them or is holding their hands. To be honest, those girls bring out the best in him. When they're together just hanging out, and he doesn't have to worry about their safety, Antoine feels comfortable enough to be a little silly in front of them and even act a bit childish -- something he wouldn't do otherwise. While with his sisters, it's only commonplace to see him hanging upside down, making funny faces, or talking childishly. And in their history together, one commonly finds late nights on which Antoine has protected one sister or the other from a bad dream and stayed up all night holding them just to make it all better.
Strengths: - DECONSTRUCTING LITERATURE, GRAPHING PARABOLAS, EXAMINING HISTORICAL ARGUMENTS | Well it had to be said somewhere! He's good at a lot of very academic stuff. Understandable, right?
- BASIC FIRST AID | He's not a doctor, but he probably has a pretty good idea of how to fix your boo-boos or what to do in medical emergencies. After all, he has two younger sisters, what more could you expect? Not many people know what to do when games of jump rope go awry or somebody downs half a bottle of Chanel -- seriously, it happens.
- COOKING | Have you tried his lasagna? God damn! Seriously, there's a reason why his sisters think of him as a male Julia Child. Just don't get mad if he gets a little whiny if his souffle falls.
- BOOSTING YOUR EGO | Well, it's true. He's kind of an expert at boosting people's egos. After all, his main purpose in life is to make you feel better about yourself.
- FIRST-PERSON SHOOTERS | Video games. Why not?!
Weaknesses: - "ME" TIME | Other than academics, Antoine spends most of his life in service of others, particularly his sisters. Because of this, he doesn't really have much time to himself and he doesn't do much for himself either.
- SOCIAL SITUATIONS | Um, yeah. He's a little bit awkward when you can't talk about school stuff. Usually, his quickest and easiest alternative is something like, "Hey, wanna play some Halo?" But that doesn't always work.
- ROMANCE | Seriously. He would love you so much and worship the ground you walk on if you were ever in a relationship with him. But he is horrible at flirting or making things angsty and romantic. Plus, he's so innocent, he'd probably go bright red in the face if you said the word "penis" to him. And to be perfectly honest, he doesn't have much time for love. He always seems distracted with other things, like school or sisters, and would hardly notice it if someone was flirting with him.
With the power of psychometry, Antoine has the power to relate details about the past condition of an object, person, or location. At this point, his ability is limited to the relation of very minute details and within the very recent past. With regard to objects, it depends on who the object belonged to and how strong that person's relationship was to it. The stronger the relationship, the easier it is for him to read its history. Strong emotions attached to an object are easier for him to read than, say, where the object has been or what specifically happened to it. Take a random book, for example; say it's one your grandmother used to read over and over again as a kid. Right now, he would probably be able to tell you that it belonged to someone you're related to and that that person not only loved it a lot but held it in high praise. "This thing really meant a lot to them," is probably what he might say. Or, if an object was a gift, he would probably be able to discern the giver's intentions in giving that gift, at least at a very basic level. Different things tend to trigger his ability in different ways, and sometimes they're even things other people aren't quite privy to. Once, he found a book in his attic (which is where the book example comes from), and he turned to his sister and said, "This book smells like grandma, I think it used to be hers." And his sister just looked at him funny and replied, "It smells like how all books smell -- like paper. What have you been smoking?" Triggers of the senses tend to be of this nature. At present, objects are probably the easiest thing for him to read. People and locations are much, much harder. Once his power becomes fully developed, he would probably be able to tell where certain scars came from, what was going through the person's mind when it happened. On a global level, this power is basically useless and he would never be able to use it to defend himself. Its strength lies on a more personal level, at the level of the people, and the relations between individuals.
Theodore de la Fontaine, father, 55 Adrienne de la Fontaine, mother, deceased Josephine "Josie" de la Fontaine, sister, 16 Cecile "Ceci" de la Fontaine, sister, 14
Adrienne de la Fontaine had such beautiful hair -- so beautiful that, as a child, Antoine begged and begged for as many chances as possible just to be able touch it and hold it in his hands. It was a beautiful golden hue, and when you held it just right at just the perfect time of day, it sort of looked or felt as though you were holding pure light in your hands. She was quite a looker in her day, and there were more guys after her than you could count with both hands. But somehow, Theodore was the one who managed to steal her heart. He was a mature, brooding man who generally did not like to talk about his emotions, but did so readily when around Adrienne. It was his sensitivity that wooed her. Josie and Ceci have a more difficult time trying to remember her, as they were much too little when Antoine's first childhood memory takes place. When he was eight years old, he hardly noticed how emaciated her body had become. To him, she was still beautiful. But her hair -- her hair was different. It didn't have the same shine, the same texture as before, as in all the stories he had been told. It felt coarse and synthetic. And when he asked about it, she just said that "Mommy's hair is fading, mon petit."
It wasn't long after that Adrienne died of cancer. She could not bring herself to tell her child the truth, that she was wearing a wig because all of her hair had fallen out from the chemotherapy. Josie and Ceci were almost too young to remember her and basically grew up without a mother. Because of this, Antoine had to step in and fulfill a role that was not entirely meant for him, but it had changed him for the better. Theodore, not being a particularly emotional man anyway, withdrew even further into himself after his wife's death. Although he was still present in his children's lives, he did not stay as close to them as Antoine remained with his sisters. He was so close to them that he knew almost everything about them and where they were twenty-four hours of the day. It didn't take him long to learn how to cook dinner and take care of the things around the house that were normally his mother's jobs. This came at the sacrifice of a greater social life, but Antoine didn't much care about that. He told himself, believed that it was what his mother would have wanted from him.
Only three years after Adrienne's death, the wound was still rather fresh in everyone's minds. So when young Ceci went into her parents' room one day, while Antoine and Josie were busy with other things and Theodore was at work, she downed half the bottle of her mother's Chanel No. 5. Once Antoine had heard her scream, he rushed in to find her lying on the floor and clutching her stomach. He quickly called the paramedics, not quite sure of what to do, but he knew it would have only hurt his dad even more to find this out. Even though Ceci was perfectly fine after a couple of days, things were a little weird between Theodore and the kids. Daughter just drank dead mother's perfume that father didn't want anybody to touch. Unfortunately, the Awkward Turtles company doesn't make a turtle for a situation like that. But the Fontaine kids got through it simply by sticking together.
When Antoine turned sixteen, he found out that he had been called upon to study at Marcus Weatherby's school in Ireland. Although he was hesitant to go, he was dying to get out of France and have a little bit of time to himself, having spent the last eight years playing Mr. Mom in the same house. This academic opportunity was also accompanied by the emergence of odd instances in Antoine's life, though it's quite possible that they started much earlier. The first one he can generally recall took place around the time he was sixteen. What with Antoine leaving the continent to go to school in another country, Theodore decided that he and the girls were going to move to a smaller house. While going through things in the attic, Antoine came across his grandmother's favorite book, The Romance of the Rose. There was no name in it, but he somehow knew it was hers -- he told Josie that it smelled like her, to which Josie replied: "It doesn't smell like old lady, it smells like all books do -- like paper. What have you been smoking?" It was a little disconcerting for Antoine to realize that maybe his senses were off. He was probably just going crazy. But things like that tended to continue well into his time at the Weatherby school, and he is never quite sure what to make of them.
Antoine isn't as ripped as you might think. He's actually very soft and cuddly, to be perfectly honest. At about six feet even, he's very much a gentle giant and has surprisingly short fingers for a guy of his stature. When it comes to clothing, he's kind of preppy, but comfort is a must. You will almost never see him wearing a collared shirt because he only likes to wear t-shirts and jeans. He doesn't really like to wear flip flops, and he basically has one pair of shoes that he wears for about a year before moving onto a new pair.
Do I have to? You know how badass I am.
